Acupuncture Success Story: GERD

September 4, 2017

This success story is closer to home than to work and more about herbs than acupuncture.

'Someone' in my family has been taking Prilosec (PPI for acid reflux) for 20 years. I have been trying to convince person to go off PPI for over 2 years, since I was fairly sure this over the counter pharmaceutical was causing bouts of otherwise unexplained anemia and other health issues. Person was unconvinced, resistant and stubbornly insisted that they simply overproduced St acid and could never go off it! Finally - person recently read a study that found PPI acid reducers are linked to early death, kidney disease, block absorption of iron, as well acalcium and magnesium (which increases incidence of osteoporosis, heart and kidney diseases). Person finally agrees to go off PPI - AND (this is the big one...) asks for my help! I give person Eastern medicine herbal formula (specific for his pattern of GERD + taking digestive enzyme and probiotics with every meal... and happy to say person is finally feeling significantly better tummy wise and is so relieved to finally be off of PPI's! Person says 'I'm enjoying a whole new digestive process. I can not thank you enough!"

After this experience: I now regularly advise patients how to get off of daily use of stomach acid reducers: most use a combination of acupuncture, herbs, a shift in eating habits, as well as a digestive enzymes and probiotics.

BTW: since removing family member's PPI, he has noticed effects of enhanced nutrient absorption AND a change in how other medication is absorbed and has had to alter/drop doses of medication.

Do you know someone w GERD who needs to get off of pharmaceutical acid reducers that cause adverse side effects? Send them to Anna Lunaria!
